In this webinar, educators will explore classroom routines, authentic data sets, and resources designed to strengthen data literacy across the mathematics curriculum. Participants will investigate strategies that encourage students to notice and wonder, ask meaningful statistical questions, examine how data are collected and represented, identify patterns and variability, consider context and potential bias, and use evidence to support conclusions. Participants will consider how data investigations can promote mathematical discourse, curiosity, critical thinking, and student agency. In recognition of World Statistics Day (October 20), I invite mathematics educators in grades 5–12, or any educators who are excited about data literacy and looking for practical routines to promote data literacy in their classrooms to join me for my NCTM webinar: Beyond the Graph: Building Data Literacy Through Classroom Routines
During the webinar, we will explore practical ways to integrate data literacy throughout the mathematics curriculum—not just during a statistics unit. Together, we will investigate classroom routines, authentic data sets, and resources that encourage students to notice and wonder, ask meaningful statistical questions, examine how data are collected and represented, identify patterns and variability, consider context and potential bias, and use evidence to support conclusions.
We will also consider how data investigations can become opportunities for mathematical discourse, curiosity, critical thinking, and student agency. My goal is for you to leave with ideas you can actually use: adaptable classroom routines, engaging sources of real-world data, practical resources, and questions that can transform a graph or data set from something students simply analyze into something they investigate.
